Project Brief

Emily and Dave came to us ready for a big change in the parts of the home where they spend the most time— the kitchen and living room. The couple desired more connection between the two rooms, which were walled off from each other. The spaces also needed to be durable with efficient circulation, because Norman (their dog / son) is a big happy boy who needs to be near his humans. And because Dave loves to throw down in the kitchen and romance his love with home-cooked meals. Did we mention that Dave was going to make all of the walnut cabinets ?

Our Approach

We analyzed their existing space: the scale and orientation of the rooms, the materiality of the existing 1970’s ranch house, and the small forest of mature trees and their beautiful variety of colors and textures. We picked up on the greens, yellows, browns, rust, and grey colors to inform our palette.

We learned that Emily and Dave would often enter their home through the garage. We created a new mudroom to buffer the interior living spaces from the garage entry, providing a transitional space where coats, keys, and shoes could be stowed away. This also created a better arrangement for tv watching and lounging on the sofa.

The kitchen was re-oriented to provide Dave with lots of counter space around the stove, where he can be a part of what’s going on in the living room while cooking. Two new counter stools offer a casual spot for meals and hangs.

While not part of the original brief, we included a small pocket door to connect the kitchen to the primary bedroom. We’ve heard that the resident ghost approved and has since moved on.
